The Sunnah of Thirty Raka’at Salah of Rajab

This is extracted from al-Ghunya li Thalibi Tariq al-Haqq by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (r.a.)

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said to his companion Salman al-Farsi (r.a), “O Salman, Allah will surely erase all the sins from the record of any believing man [mu’min], and of any believing woman [mu’mina], who performs thirty cycles [raka’at] of ritual prayer [yusalli thalathina rak’a] in the course of this month [Rajab], reciting in each cycle [Raka’a] the Opening Sura of the Book [Surah Fatiha] and the Sura that begins with“Say: ‘He is Allah, One'” [Surah al-ikhlas] three times, and the Sura that begins with “Say: ‘O unbelievers'” [Surah al-Kafirun] three times. That man or woman will be granted the same reward as a person who has fasted throughout the entire month. He or she will be treated as one of those who continue to perform the ritual prayer [al-musallin] right through to the following year, and will be credited every day with a deed as noble as that of one of the martyrs of the battle of Badr [shahid min shuhada’i Badr].”

For every day of fasting [in Rajab], the worship of an entire year will be recorded in favor of the believer concerned, whose credit will be enhanced by a thousand degrees. If the believer keeps the fast throughout the whole of this month, as well as performing this particular salat-prayer [i.e., the aforementioned thirty cycles [Raka’at] of ritual prayer], Allah will deliver that man or woman from the Fire of Hell and declare that he or she is entitled to enter the Garden of Paradise, therein to dwell in the vicinity of Allah (Glory be to Him).

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) then said, Angel Jibreel (a.s) informed me of this, and then he went on to say: “O Muhammad, this a clear sign to mark the distinction between you true believers, on the one hand, and those who join partners with God [mushrikin] and hypocrites [munafiqin] on the other, because the hypocrites do not perform that ritual prayer [la yusalluna dhalik].”

Having heard these words addressed to him by the Prophet (s.a.w), Salman (r.a) responded by saying: “O Messenger, tell me exactly how I must perform this particular salat-prayer, and exactly when I must perform it.”

“O Salman,” said Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w): This special prayer is done in this manner:

(1)- 10 raka’at (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done on the first day of Rajab. (Another naration says the first part of Rajab)

Once the first 10 raka’at are done, one, raise his hands, and recite the following:

Rajab 1st day 1

La ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharikalah, lahul mulku, walahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa Huwa hayyun la yamoot, bi ya dihil khairu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shain’in Qadeeer.

Translation: There is no god save Allah, alone without any partner. To him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. He gives life and causes to diewhile He is Ever-living and never dies.In His hand is the goodand He has power over all things.

Rajab 1st day 2

Allahumma laa maani’a lima a’taita, wa laa mu’tiya lima mana’ta, wa laa, yanfa’u zhaljaddi, minkali jadd.

Translation: O Allah, no one can withhold what You have Given, and no one can give what You have Withheld, nor will the worldly fortune of the possessor of such fortune benefit him, if he does not attain the Fortune that comes from You (in the hereafter).

Then you must rub your face with your hands, and at this point, you have completed the first ten raka’ats [cycles].”

(2)-  10 rakaat (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done in the middle day of Rajab.

On the 15th day of Rajab, once the 10 raka’at are done, one raises his hands and recites the following

Rajab 2nd day 1
La ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharikalah, lahul mulku, walahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa Huwa hayyun la yamoot, bi ya dihil khairu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shain’in Qadeeer.

Translation: There is no God except Allah Alone.  No partner has He.  To Him Belongs the Kingdom and to Him belongs the Praise.  He Brings to life and Causes death, while He is Ever-Living and never dies.  All goodness is in His Hand, and He has Power over all things.

Then recite,
Rajab 2nd day 2
Ilahan, Waahidan, Ahadan, Samadan, Fardan, Witraa. Laa yattakhidhu sohibatan wa laa waladaa.

(I worship Him) as God, the Only, the One, the Eternal, the Unique, the Original.  He takes unto Himself, neither a female consort nor a son.

“Then you must rub your face with your hands, for at this point you will have completed the second set of ten cycles [raka’at].

(3)-  10 rakaat (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done at the end day of Rajab.

Once the last 10 raka’at are done, one raises his hands and recites the following:

Rajab 3rd day 1

Rajab 3rd day 2

Wa Sallahu ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘alihith-thohireen, laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa billahil ‘aliyyil adzheem.

Translation: And Salutations upon Muhammad and the people of purity.  And there is no power or strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Almighty.

Then one must rub his face with his hands, and at this point, he has completed the last 10 raka’at.

“You should then ask for whatever you need, whereupon He will surely give a positive response to your prayer of supplication [du’a’]. Allah will interpose seventy ditches between you and Hell [Jahannam], and each of those ditches will be as wide as the distance that separates this earth from heaven above. For every cycle of salat-prayer you have performed, He will credit you with a million cycles, raka’at [alf alf rak’a]. He will also inscribe on your record an exemption from the Fire of Hell and a permit to cross the Narrow Bridge [sirat].”

Salman al Farsi (r.a) is reported as having said: “As soon as the Prophet (s.a.w) had finished speaking, I sank to the ground in humble prostration, weeping as I sought to express my gratitude to Allah (Exalted is He) for what I had just been privileged to hear.”
Note: Salat, prayer is in sets of 2 Raka’ah, doing the salaam after each set. This way we do 10 Raka’ah in 5 pairs and the supplication after the salaam of the fifth pair. Allah and his beloved know the best.
