Forgiveness and Spiritual Advancement

bismillah1114444The following is taken from the Removal of Confusion by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (r.a).

Some of the misguided have become stagnant, contenting themselves with the gatherings of remembrance, in the mornings and evenings, while remaining heedless of Allah in between.  But this practice is of no use for the spiritual wayfarer seeking the stations of the friends of Allah.  Perhaps, he who contends with this will cite the prophetic saying, “If the servant remembers his Lord for a time at beginning and at the end of the day, he will be Forgiven whatever comes in between.”

Forgiveness, however, does not include spiritual advancement.  The result of Forgiveness is to equate the sinner with someone who has not committed that sin, not to equate him with the one who has performed acts of worshipful obedience.

Understand that the desire of the friends of Allah is continuous spiritual elevation, with each breath, through all the stations This is achieved by the constant remembrance of Allah, so that they do not regard themselves as having fulfilled one atom of Allah’s Rights on them, meaning they still believe that Rights of Allah on them are infinite hence infinite rights cannot be fulfilled, therefore they go on a journey which has no end, or they go into a sea without shore.

(Triumphant are) Those that turn (to Allah) in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah,: that bow down and prostrate themselves in prayer; that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limit set by Allah;- (These do rejoice). So proclaim the glad tidings to the Believers. [Qur’an 9.112]
